Now that summer is here, there is a relaxed atmosphere feeling that a lot of us can’t seem to shake off. Keeping up a running routine may prove to be challenging; partly because of the season but mostly because of something that affects many runners; pain. I’d love to guarantee that there is a world where you will feel ZERO pain while running but I can’t. So, here’s what I can tell you. A little bit of pain is fine. However, you want to make sure that you are not “suffering”; otherwise you will soon lose interest and the joy of running. Here’s what you can do to reduce pain with running.

  • Train Consistently
    • Running consistently provides a great opportunity for your muscular tissues to build their capacity and, in the process, tolerate running. I wouldn’t recommend more running if you have pre-existing conditions such as bone stress injuries.
  • Up Your Step Rate
    • Step rate is simply the number of steps you take per minute. Studies have shown that increasing your base or preferred step rate by as little as five percent can reduce loading to your knee and hip joints making running more comfortable.

My team and I at Travelers Health and Wellness are ready, willing, and able to help you realize your running potential while keeping your pain levels as low as possible.
